Tales

Oyster tales

Over the centuries oysters have intrigued, repulsed and delighted (and in some cases - excited). Here's a few oyster tales that tickled our fancy...

Oyster fuel

For a change from good old-fashioned oysters and champagne… here’s something that packs more of a punch…

raw oyster
1/2 shot of tomato juice
dash of horseradish
1/3 teaspoon pepper
shot of vodka
lemon (for garnish)

Combine tomato juice, horseradish and pepper. Mix thoroughly. Add a shot of vodka. Put a raw oyster in the glass and garnish with lemon wedge.

Pressure-proof Oyster

Rolex was founded in 1905 in London. At that point in time they were just one of hundreds of small watch manufacturers. That was until they were issued with the first timing certificate for a wristwatch… proving it was just as accurate as the best pocket watches. This is when wristwatches became common attire.

In 1926 Rolex patented a pressure proof solution – creating the Rolex Oyster watch. In order to promote it, Mercedes Gleitze was wearing a Rolex Oyster when she became the first English woman to swim the Channel.

Rolex’s continual leadership in the watch industry was recognised by a panel of industry leaders who voted the Rolex Oyster "The Watch of the Century".

Zero = Oyster

Meaning of the number 0 [zero]:

Ancient Mayans and Olmecs used the concept of an empty oyster shell to express the concept of Zero. oyster is an empty shell, but also a giver of life, which produces a living thing or another ‘being’ almost magically, much like Zero

Oyster Club

In the 18th century, there was a frightfully important club that was founded in Edinburgh, called the Oyster Club, by an impressingly famous scientist called James Hutton. Mr Hutton passed his evenings at the Oyster Club in the company of men such as economist Adam Smith, the chemist Joseph Black and the philosopher David Hume, as well as occasional visiting sparks such as Benjamin Franklin and James Watt. They took the opportunity to discuss politics, the economy and the implications on the world of science.
