Copy preparation

You want your copy to be read, you want it to be understood and you want it to entice a response. It all seems pretty simple – right?

And then let's not forget; the hierarchy of information, tone of voice, level of relevance and variance of interpretation. That’s when it becomes complex.

But here are a few pointers we use to bring it back to being simple again - a checklist that may be helpful for when you are writing your brief and / or critiquing copy.

A little distance always goes a long way. Sometimes you can just get too close to a job.

Hitting the spot - asking:

  • who am I talking to?
  • what makes them interested?
  • why can I succeed in talking to them?
  • am I speaking their language?
  • how much do they want or need to know (now)?

In their shoes - thinking:

  • what do I want the reader to remember?
  • what do I want the reader to do next?
  • what do I want the reader to feel?

Devil’s in the detail - ensuring:

  • factually correct
  • grammatically correct
  • and it all makes sense
